Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of a person's leanness or corpulence based on their height and weight, and is intended to quantify tissue mass. It is widely used as a general indicator of whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.
BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared (kg/m²). The resulting number indicates whether the person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²)
or
BMI = (weight (lbs) / height² (inches)) × 703
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations and should not be used as a diagnostic tool. BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat mass.
